Music Director
Kathryn McIvor
Hello! My name is Kathryn McIvor, and I am privileged to serve as the music director here at OPC. My goal is to engage the gifts of this congregation in ways that glorify God and build up the Body of Christ. My passion is worship planning, and finding ways to allow people to worship through music. Music is a particularly unique medium, and its role in the Church has been quite varied throughout history. The challenge of a church musician today is to discern the role of music in their given congregation, and it is a challenge that I readily accept, along with the other musicians and artists in this congregation, trusting God’s guidance and grace along the way.
I grew up in Portland, and moved to Spokane in 2005 to attend Whitworth University. During my time at Whitworth, I had wonderful choral experiences under two exceptional directors who shaped my view of choral leadership and gave me a strong foundation and support system to grow as a musician. I also worked with a worship team that was completely student-led, under the mentorship of a professor who teaches the theology of worship in addition to musical skills. Whitworth constantly presented me with opportunities to grow my skills and practice in the realm of music ministry, through both on-campus ministries and local churches, and after four years I can say I truly did a little bit of everything.
After graduating in May 2009 with a B.A. in Music Ministry, I continued to work with Whitworth’s chapel music program over the summer and came to OPC in September of 2009. My work here involves directing the Chancel Choir, leading the Praise Team, and working with Pastor Matt in planning services. It has been such a blessing, not to mention growth experience, to be here, and I am so thankful for all of the musicians who volunteer their time week after week. We believe in creating music that honors God in its quality and honors one another in using our gifts well. Please come join us as we seek to grow our skills together, and have a lot of fun in the process.
