Crosswalk
"Crosswalk" is a youth program of Volunteers of America. It provides lifesaving services to street kids, homeless and troubled youth. Most kids come from complicated family situations in the city and valley. Many have been abused. Some rely on alcohol and drugs. Most feel hopeless about the future.
The goal of Crosswalk is to help young people avoid or leave the streets by reuniting families, supplying survival necessities, finding safe homes, teaching self-sufficiency, and offering hope and support.
A small professional staff offers crisis counseling, life skills training, job assistance, substance abuse and mental health intervention, case work and referrals. All services are free and voluntary.
Churches, service clubs, families and businesses provide daily meals, Emergency shelter is available 365 days a year. Spokane public schools collaborates with Crosswalk to offer the on-site Crosswalk School. A Scholars Project offers college scholarships for graduating students. Recreation, supervision and encouragement are provided by staff and community volunteers.
Items needed include: personal hygiene products, combs, brushes, sox, boxers, t-shirts, gloves and double A batteries.
One student said, "Without Crosswalk — I would still be one of the lost, you did not change my life, but my life would not have changed without you."
